Graphic Designs Vs. Hand Drawn

This past fall in 2008, I started using Illustrator for making graphic designs. I made a number of illustrations I thought I would get around to using. Well, it hasn't happened yet. From birches, to fiddleheads to stripes. They were done in black and white solely for the purpose of making silk screens.

When I began making silk screens, I started with Dover Publications and made quite a few. A lot of the designs were larger and more geometric. I haven't really found too much use for them as I guess my taste has changed a bit. The patterns were too large for me as I work more in small scale. I couldn't always find what I had in my head - so that's where Illustrator came in. I haven't necessarily found it an easy program to master. I initially sat down with a friend who works in Illustrator so she could get me jump started. That was a huge help!

Lately, I've noticed I like designs that are a bit more organic - so, I ordered up a few Net Flix and treated myself to a couple movies but in order to watch them, I was to just sit and mindlessly draw. A welcome change. Here's what I came up with.

Dogwoods, seeds, Matisse leaf patterns, squiggly circles and roots. Here's what they look like screened onto polymer clay.
We'll see what happens when I combine them with geometrics, micas, or whatever else. What's a little bit more scrap clay, eh?

There are a lot of stencil sites on the internet. When I hit a block, I usually go look around on those sites and renew my creative juices!

These designs are delightful! Makes me not only enjoy the view, but want to touch the texture, too...
