Over the past few years, I've gotten away from making beads and polymer for a bit but have been working towards bringing it back into my metalwork. Having come from working with metal first, I wanted to get back to that, learn more, and add elements like polymer, gemstones and different metals to my work.
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is one of my most recent pieces from the studio. The first is in progress:

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And here's the finished piece:
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

The polymer was cold connected between sterling and copper. Whenever adding polymer to metal, it usually doesn't happen quickly for me. It seems to be a slower process than the bead making was.

My studio has also expanded a bit. I seem to have taken over most of the downstairs. I've been acquiring tools (just another tool junkie). There's two tools I tend to use the most - my hydraulic press and my rolling mill. I enjoy making paper patterns with my Silhouette for the mill - which can also be used to texture polymer. I'll share some of those in the days to come!Janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10263906086314534192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119873521433702593.post-10308683313970789072012-07-30T07:00:00.000-04:002012-07-30T07:00:08.555-04:00Marvelous MondaySheila McDonald works wonders with enamel on 18ct gold and silver, paired with gold and silver leaf. Her work is bold and her colors hit the spot. If you've ever worked with gold or silver leaf, you'll be impressed with her intricate work. I love how she uses the leaf to form shapes around color. Hope you enjoy and have a marvelous Monday!
This time, it was a drive up to the beautiful city of Burlington, VT. Burlington is bustling with energy as it sits amidst several colleges. We managed to enjoy a nice relaxing meal with some friends at Sweetwaters. Sweetwaters is located on Church Street which feels very much like Faneuil Hall here in Boston. No cars are allowed on this street, theres lot's of shops, restaurants and people watching. We ate outside, drank the local beer, and enjoyed the view. Ben, my physical therapist, insisted I try Magic Hat, or not come home. It didn't disappoint!

While perusing the internetI saw this beautiful polymer collaboration piece by Annie Pennington and Jillian Palone. There's so much I love about this piece. The texture, the patina, the colors and the shape. Sweet!
Of the numerous techniques that she uses with her metalwork, I found her resin inlay work to have this quiet beauty about them. I like how she incorporates gold and sterling as the material to suspend in the resin. This first photo reminds of minnows shimmering as the light catches them.

Yet this black resin and ivory inlay is such a strong piece with a tranquil quality as well. Carla recently began incorporating scrimshaw design in her work.
Which brings me to where I've been. . . for probably 20 years or so I've had a hip problem that went undiagnosed. In fact, labral tears were never diagnosed until three years ago. Long story short, it created a messy problem with my hip. So much so that I had to have a hip replacement. I had a scheduled surgery for late in May and am three weeks into recovery. I spent two days in the hospital and then was released. They teach you to go upstairs in the hospital, and as long as you can maneuver that, you're good to go. I do have stairs in my house, so climbing the stairs as I had done in the past looked a little different for a while. I tend to stay to the right side of the stairs so anyone coming up the stairs is in the left "passing lane". My faithful dog Luca is the only one who wants to walk behind me. In fact, he's always by my side. He's the epitome of man's best friend.

I was able to get rid of the crutches at two weeks (and began driving again) and am now using a cane. On good days, I try to walk without it. I started outpatient physical therapy this week. I'm looking forward to seeing my doctor today as I've got a couple pages of questions for him. . . fortunately, I did listen to my p.t. who told me to write down questions as they came up.

So, what does one do when recovering? For me, for some reason I couldn't get into the book "Defending Jacob" as I had planned. I've always seemed to need to get up and move too much. Which really doesn't explain why I managed to watch way too much t.v.! But as far as the studio goes, I really haven't spent much time there at all. For the first 1 1/2 weeks or so, I had no desire to even turn on my computer. Go figure. Getting into the studio just feels like too big of a task at the moment. So things may be quiet for a while - but I will definitely get back to at least my Monday posts. Until then . . .Janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10263906086314534192noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119873521433702593.post-47875201080697929272012-06-18T14:48:00.002-04:002012-06-18T14:48:17.952-04:00Marvelous MondayI had all these intentions of scheduling numerous "marvelous Monday" posts during my recent unannounced break. I even intended on writing a quick note to let you know I'd be gone. But unfortunately, you know what they say about best laid intentions, right? I promise to write about my disappearance from the internet this Wednesday. Unfortunately though, it's totally unrelated to polymer or anything possibly artistic. I've only just recently started catching up with blogs for a little inspiration. My life had been pretty uncreative for about three weeks now. But it's good to be back.

So, seeing that it's Monday, I wanted to share the work of Angela Bubash. She's a talented metalsmith professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. I was instantly enamored with her "fins" line of jewelry - it's quite extensive - you can view it on her website here. I swear I was hearing coral reefer music the moment I clicked. And upon a closer look at her stones, I was surprised to see what some of them were - dyed feathers! Would you have guessed?
She mixes her color palettes from acrylic dust. The dust is then laminated by heat treating it into solid slices. It has an agate-like appeal and her color palettes are vivid yet very soft. Hope you enjoy and have a marvelous Monday!
I had made the decision to start making more jewelry and one of the things I wanted to create more of, using the disc cutter, were earrings with circular components made from metal. I've shown a couple photos of these in the past. But the business side of me thought maybe I should do something with this tool to help cover the cost of this investment. Innocent enough, right? I already had my Etsy supply shop set up previously that was used to de-stash some supplies, so I thought I would put a few disc shapes in there for sale. I already had some sterling, copper and brass sheet in different gauges so I began making a few different sizes. The sales started trickling in soon after. And once the shop was set up, having a product line that I could just re-list rather than individually creating a listing for each sure made my life simpler. What I didn't plan on was how busy I would be during the months of October through December. My intention was to create a little side business that would allow me to make my art jewelry at a leisurely pace - and not have to create one or two listings per day as they suggest in the Etsy world. But what happened was I became immersed in this side business.

So where am I headed? Having done this over the past 10 years or so, I have much stronger sense of what my strengths and weakness are as well as what I'm willing to do and what I'm not. If you've been following my blog, through this transition of work activity, what's remained for the most part has been my Monday posts. That's my passion. I love being inspired by and sharing the art jewelry that I come across during the week. But I also want to be able to step back and create more of that. I'd joined the Boston Metal Clay Guild in the fall of 2010 and I intend on using base metal clay in some of that (like the earrings below).

But I know that there is also a need for components in jewelry, especially something a little more artful. So I purchased my dream machine - the Durston rolling mill. I've been experimenting with textures and hope to soon add these not only to my jewelry, but also my supply shop. (http://naftalisupply.etsy.com)

Here's a little sample of some of the textures I've done with the mill. I haven't nearly had enough time to spend creating textures with it but I've always got an eye out for that special item from the hardware, fabric or craft store!

Through this busy transition, I plan on continuing with my Monday posts and my Out of the Studio posts because they seem to be what most of you want to see and hear. So stay tuned for what's in the works for Naftali.Janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10263906086314534192noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119873521433702593.post-81041686491891746572012-04-16T07:00:00.003-04:002012-04-16T07:00:08.175-04:00Marvelous MondayThere were just too many photos of Fiona Chapman's jewelry to share, that I wasn't able to pick a few. That's the way it's supposed to work, right? The polymer clay artist had made a bead using my crackling tutorial and was selling it on Etsy - which is fine. She kindly referenced my tutorial in her listing. Shortly after, someone pinned it on Pinterest. But what happened next surprised us both. Someone left a comment on one of the pins with my instructions to the technique. That's what began being repinned. And you know Pinterest, it spreads. Unfortunately, this person did not have my permission to do this. And as the pins spread even more, it erroneously became HER tutorial! For those of us that make tutorials, we put a lot of time and effort into making them with the intention of selling them. Unfortunately, those who repinned it including the instructions, didn't realize this was a copyright infringement. After I requested to have the pins removed, they removed the instructions. I was able to track it back to the woman responsible. I sent her a facebook message and have yet to hear back. I've done the best I could. So, if you happen to see this original photo on Pinterest and you see instructions, know that they do not have my permission.
If your work is on the internet, people can and will pin your work. Period. But it got me thinking so I went to look at the tutorials that I had pinned on my board. Fortunately for me, I haven't spent a lot of time on Pinterest so I only had a couple. But I've noticed a lot of polymer clay tutorial type boards on Pinterest now and can't help but wonder if these are truly free information. Maybe we should all be a little more careful before we hit that "repin" button.
Janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10263906086314534192noreply@blogger.com12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119873521433702593.post-86097538619601856372012-04-11T07:00:00.008-04:002012-04-11T07:00:11.003-04:00Out of the StudioLast month, Laurie Prophater had blogged about Earth as Art. I loved many of the images I saw from her link and vowed to use one of the images as inspiration. All the photos were pretty spectacular, and I'm sure if you follow Laurie's blog, you were probably inspired as well. I had been experimenting trying to make a pattern that would emulate stone, particularly a pattern you might find with jaspers. The colors I used were found from the photo titled "Algerian Abstract". You can read about it here.

I made these earrings using the pattern that evolved. The disc components are copper clay pieces that have a subtle rainbow patina that you can't really see in the photo at this angle. The colors change as the disc moves.

Today I thought I would blog about Lisa Hawthorne. I had blogged about her back in 2009 which you can see here. Some of her newer work has a more tribal kind of feeling to it. I especially love these two brooches.
It was planned very quickly and before I knew it, I was gone. So - I plan on doing Monday's post on Friday. A backwards kind of week.

But the weather in Florida was spectacular. It couldn't have been any nicer. One afternoon we went to a beach and had a visitor most of the afternoon. I was amazed at how these blue herons move their long necks around . . . therefore, photos.

And while I'm on the topic of animals, Luca had to go to the country for a few days - to what I call Camp Bob. Bob is an unusual sort of guy. His hobby is collecting exotic animals. He has the typical sheep, donkey, chickens, rooster but then you also find the peacock, yaks, emus and alpacas. Bob also boards dogs. The two never mix - but they check each other out as some are separated only by a fence. Ever see an emu? These birds are from Australia and the males make these drumming noises.

When I dropped Luca off, one of the alpacas was just a day old. When I returned this picture was taken. He's the little black guy. In the distance, you can see one of the yaks.
Her metal of choice is sterling silver and she dramatically finishes it with either a glowing white finish or a black patina - both with textures. In her current work she combines these voluminous metal shapes with polyurethane resin in various matte colors resulting in a very striking portfolio. I wasn't able to upload more of her current work but it can be seen here. Be sure to click on the images at the top of the page. Her pinks and blues are just dreamy. I hope you enjoy and have a marvelous Monday.
I stumbled onto her Etsy shop and fell in love with her work. Here are some of the beautiful rings she made using these lo-tech styrofoam texture plates. Last night, she did a class with Allison Lee on Craftcast. I had hoped to have this post done in time, but if you want more - you can always purchase the recording!

I was immediately intrigued with how simple it seemed. Could it possibly be true? I ordered mine from Dick Blick (12 9 x 12 sheets for $5.93) and I'm pleased to say how easy it is! As long as you can draw, you can make these texture plates. And you don't even have to be able to draw - you can trace copyright-free images and then transfer them to your styrofoam plates. Wanaree has a great tutorial on her blog that you can access here. She also did her first enameling project using these texture sheets which was truly ambitious!

You can leave the texture alone as I have done, or fill the "cells" with polymer, canes, resin, liquid polymer, or whatever.

And Michael's also sells something called adhesive foam sheets. Lois Maisel, a member from the Boston Metal Clay Guild, sent me a link after we discussed the styrofoam texture sheets at the last meeting. However, I've never used these and don't know if they're as dense as the ones from Dick Blick.

The design lines themselves can't be too fine like you can get with a ppp, but this lo-tech technique offers another option for those of us who don't like to carve and whose design aesthetic it suits. All of his pieces are hand blown at 2000 degrees. He uses layers of colored enamels and precious metals in his work. The results are pretty exquisite. I didn't find much information on his website, yet found his Etsy link there. Scroll through his website and enjoy the feast of color. Enjoy and have a marvelous Monday!
Everything went pretty smoothly. I just found it hard to find the time needed to learn how things work on a Mac. Thanks for my friend Lori Magno who helped make the transition a little smoother. I'm not completely where I want to be as the "time machine" (Apple's answer to backing up) hasn't been set up yet. I found out the cable to the one I purchased doesn't want to stay in my USB port. I just need the time to go back to the Apple store and change it out.

As for the transition - the first blog I wrote from my Mac took a while as I didn't even know how to right click to copy photos on the trackpad that I own. Rather than a mouse, I selected the trackpad. I think I'll be going back to the mouse as I feel I'll end up with carpel tunnel syndrome if I don't. For me, it seems to take a little more effort to navigate than the mouse. Then, for a long time, call it insecurity, I ended up with this (photo below). No, I'm not a day trader. I just kept thinking "what if" that file I need isn't really on the new computer? Now that I know all my photos (over 6000 of them) are now on the Mac, and my tutorials can be sent without any problems, it's all good.

I did make a bad decision though. I purchased Apple's photo editing software known as Aperture. Not a fan. Bottom line is, it couldn't resize files the way I was accustomed to, and you can't do adjustment layers on Aperture. So, I returned it the next day - have I mentioned how wonderful it is working with Apple customer care? 1-800 . . . any day, any time. The next day I purchased Photoshop Elements. They treated it as un upgrade rather than a full purchase seeing as I previously owned the product. Saved $20.

And I never seem to do things the easy way - in the midst of this, I purchased the Canon G10 camera and had to learn that as well. One thing I'm a mad proponent of, is using YouTube to your benefit. After looking glassy-eyed at the instruction manual that came with the camera for about 15 minutes or so, I went to YouTube and did a search for something like "using a Canon G10" and found a series (actually numerous videos) from setting up the camera menu to macro - to aperture priority - some of the first things I wanted to focus on. Those videos helped immensely with the learning curve! Then I had to figure out how to transfer files from the camera to the computer. There's no card reader involved. There's a little slot on the side of the machine that I just slip the camera card into. Easy.

And what about the photos I take on my iPhone? I'm now on the iCloud which I love. Make a change here (iPhone) it puts it there (computer) just like the commercial says.

Speaking of the iPhone, I took a few shots of some cookies I made. Last night and today, we're celebrating the holiday Purim. I won't go into the holiday, but if you're interested, you can learn about it here. In honor of the holiday, we make hamentashen (3 sided cookies). I used to make these when the kids were little, put them in baskets (Shalach Manot) and deliver them to friends, family and neighbors. I hadn't done it for years and figured - why not? So here's a photo journal of some of the process (wine glasses make the best sized cookies).

And life has been still busy in the studio. I hope to get around to blogging about what I've been up to all these months. It's long overdue. But last week I learned a new technique (new to me anyway) and wanted to make a few samples to share here. I think you're going to really love it. Until then - ciao. Sorry, couldn't resist.Janicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10263906086314534192noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119873521433702593.post-59110547157398463622012-03-05T07:00:00.005-05:002012-03-05T07:00:20.257-05:00Marvelous MondayLeslie Codina makes ceramic works of art. Described as "sophisticated whimsy", her collection now includes vases, footed pots, platters, bowls and more but her favorite is still the totem. Her pieces are infused with playful color and vivid contrast. Her work is a limited edition works of art so they don't end up appearing around your corner. The poles are often referred to as ceramic totems, or urban trees yet she sometimes thinks of them as garden weeds. You can actually see creepy crawly things from the garden on some of the totems. The totems can be left out in the sun, wind and rain but have to be taken indoors during the snow. The sizes range from 5 feet - 7 feet tall. Hope you enjoy and have a marvelous Monday!
Whether it is thought provoking phrases, soothing affirmations, or ancient symbols, my work speaks of how I feel whether the design is ultimately a pair of earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet." - Tish Collins

Tish began her journey with art jewelry via beads and polymer clay. Although her path has changed over time, they still have a place in her newer work. I enjoy her focal shapes, beautiful etchings, mixed metals and overall color composition. I hope you enjoy and have a marvelous Monday!
